Health Promotion Act

The Health Promotion Act provides for the implementation of the National Health and Nutrition Survey and for the notification and nutritional management of specified food service facilities, and others.
A specified food service facility is a facility that continuously provides 100 or more meals at a time or 250 or more meals per day to a specific and large number of people, and a person who has established a specified food service facility is required to notify it. It also provides that the person who has in place a specified food service facility must carry out appropriate nutritional management in accordance with the standards prescribed by Regulations for Enforcement of the Health Promotion Act.
In accordance with Article 19 of the Health Promotion Act, the prefectural governor appoint nutrition counselors from among officials of the prefecture, cities that have health centers, and special wards who are qualified physicians and registered dietitians, and in accordance with Article 18, Paragraph 1 of the Act, nutrition counselors provide the necessary guidance and advice on implementing nutritional management to specified food service facilities.

The article introduces the history of nutrition improvement in Japan and the nutrition policy of Japan, which overcame the postwar nutritional deficiencies in a short period of time and has curbed the increase of obesity and lifestyle-related diseases due to westernization of food in recent years. This book can serve as a model for nutritional improvement in the world.

Strategic Initiative for a Healthy and Sustainable Food Environment(HSFE)

It is an initiative to create a food environment led by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and promoted through collaboration between industry, academia and government. This initiative considers nutritional and environmental issues such as excessive salt intake, thinness among young women and nutritional disparities caused by economic disparities as serious social issues, and develops a food environment where everyone can be naturally healthy through cooperation and collaboration among industry, academia, government and other stakeholders. This initiative aims to extend the healthy life expectancy of people in Japan and around the world, and to realise a vibrant and sustainable society.
